Is Mandrill as a mailing thing mandatory? The tracking links make my mail client think all the mails from here are a scam, and they look horrible in reply quotes.

Not mandatory to use Mandrill. I could switch off click tracking I guess. 
I will need to do some tweaking of Mandrill settings soon, so I'll have a look if I can make the URLs less of a mess (I agree they look rubbish in email clients)
